A Japanese man who has been working remotely from Bali for more than a year may face lengthy jail time after police found marijuana in his possession.

Denpasar Police Deputy Chief I Wayan Jiarta told reporters today that the 43-year-old man, identified as NT, was arrested on May 9 at around 2:30pm after leaving his hotel on Kubu Anyar Street in Kuta.

Jiarta explained that the police had received a tip about NT earlier, which led to the suspect’s arrest.

“Based on the suspect’s statements, the marijuana in his possession was obtained by an unidentified individual to whom he transferred IDR700,000 (US$48) and [the suspect] later took it to an agreed address,” Jiarta said.

The marijuana in NT’s possession weighed 0.52 grams, police said.

While his profession was not disclosed, Jiarta confirmed that NT entered Bali using a tourist visa but was working remotely online.

Under Indonesian law, NT could face up to 12 years’ imprisonment if he is found guilty for Class I narcotics possession.
