A couple of teens were tracked down by police after allegedly stealing a pair of iPhone 6’s belonging to Ukrainian tourists.
The mugging took place on Jl. Poppies II, Kuta on Wednesday.
The two teens from Karangasem, East Bali, INM, 16, and IKB, 14, eventually dumped the iPhones though for fear of their locations being tracked—but they apparently didn’t even turn the phones off so tracking was still enabled.
But where they really went wrong was abandoning their motorbike at the scene in Kuta.
The teens had grabbed one of the tourists’ bags, in a tug-of-war-like action, which ultimately caused them to fall from their bike.
“When pulling the strap of the target’s bag, it broke, and the victim crashed into the motorbike of the offender,” Kuta Police Commissioner I Wayan Sumara told Tribun Bali on Wednesday.
The teens apparently managed to snatch the victims’ bags and along with the two iphones, but fled quickly, leaving their crashed Scoopy at the scene—anyone who’s familiar with Indonesian-style street justice knows it’s best to vacate the scene than face the wrath of an angry mob.
After they made their escape, the teens hid the phones on a side street of Jl. Poppies, Gang Bedugul.
The phones were ultimately tracked via GPS since they had been left on and the two teens were hunted down to their boardinghouse in Denpasar thanks to the massive clue they left at the scene of the crime, the Scoopy.
Both teens have been arrested and were still being examined by Kuta Police, as of writing time.
