Inmate relocated to Bangli from Kerobokan Prison riot dies in cell from asthma attack

An inmate at the narcotics prison in Bangli, Bali was pronounced dead on Monday after suffering from an asthma attack.

It’s stories like these that really make you wonder about the hygienic conditions inside prisons here (or anywhere for that matter) and how readily available emergency health treatment is for prisoners.

The deceased inmate, identified as Kadek Mardika, had been transferred to Bangli some time ago from LP Kerobokan when the overcrowded prison cleared out a number of inmates following a deadly prison clash, according to Merdeka

This is not Mardika’s first issue with asthma—he has reportedly been afflicted with the condition for a long time and had often suffered asthma attacks while in his cell.

Bangli Narcotics Prison Warden Bambang Marianto confirmed Mardika’s death was from acute asthma.

Marianto said Mardika’s fatal asthma attack started around 4 am and that he was taken to the hospital for treatment, but was ultimately declared dead at 5 am.

He added that Mardika had also received treatment for asthma in Bangli in February.
