Indonesian youth activists call on Jokowi to visit Kerobokan Prison, beg for mercy for Bali 9 (VIDEO)

“We are the youth of Indonesia and the world and we have something to say to say to President Jokowi,” begins a video put together by an activist group called Youth Against the Death Penalty that was just posted on Monday.

The young activits show a series of youth in their video, giving reasons why the Bali Nine pair should not be executed, including: “The death penalty doesn’t belong in the 21st century.”

“To use someone’s life as an example is very extreme. It doesn’t have any place in modern society.”

The bilingual English-Bahasa Indonesia video then shows scenes from Kerobokan Prison of Myuran Sukumaran’s work in the art program and Andrew Chan leading a prayer amoung inmates.

Hoping their pleas for mercy don’t fall on deaf ears, the youth then make the case that they are the future voters in Indonesia and Jokowi should not wait another five years (an election term) to hear them.

Ultimately, the video urges the tough-on-drugs Indonesian president to come visit Kerobokan Prison and see firsthand the rehabilitation work that Chan and Sukumaran have pioneered in the prison.

It doesn’t seem likely that Jokowi will change his mind on these executions since he’s committed so much to saying that they will happen again and again, or if he’ll even respond to this video, but at the very least, it’s impressive to see Indonesian youth taking a stand for their beliefs.
