The trial has started for an Indonesian man accused of causing the death of an Australian woman when he hit her with his motorbike.
Benafentura Nggeo showed “recklessness” by not honking or slowing down when he hit Bernadette O’Connor as she was crossing the road in front of Peninsula Beach Resort in Tanjung Benoa, prosecutors said in Denpasar District Court on Monday.
The accident was on July 31 around 1:30 am.
“The defendant saw the victim … was crossing the street,” prosecutor Wiraguna Wiradharma said in court, as quoted by AAP.
“The defendant should have slowed down, honked or stopped to give priority to the victim but he didn’t do that and the defendant’s motorbike hit the victim which caused her to fall on the street and die.”
The 23-year-old defendant is representing himself in trial against charges of reckless driving causing death, which has a max penalty of six years behind bars and/or a Rp 12 million fine, reports said.
The trial should pick back up next week.
