Indonesian transmigration program to relocate north Bali villagers to farms in Sulawesi

North Bali’s Buleleng regency is sending residents to West Sulawesi as part of an Indonesian transmigration program.

Family heads from ten different north Bali families will be relocated to Sinyonyoi Village, Mamuju, West Sulawesi.

The transmigration program has been on a break for two years, but it’s picking back up again for this group of family leaders, to move from Bali in mid-December 2016, according to NusaBali

The Indonesian government has historically employed transmigration as a way of dealing with overpopulation, as well as as a means of giving opportunities to disadvantaged, typically landless citizens.

The people moving have been carefully selected and trained since this past August, says Buleleng head of Mapower and Transmigration, Ni Made Dwi Prianti Putri Koriawan.

Each family is to receive two hectares of farmland, with one of the hectares ready to harvest, and a place to stay, says Koriawan.
