Indonesian prohibition of lobster and crab fishing spells bankruptcy for Balinese fishermen

Indonesia’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has reportedly issued a prohibition that has Balinese fishermen quaking in their waders.

With regulation no. 1/2015, catching lobster, crabs, and crab eggs is prohibited for environmental protection purposes, according to Okezone

Banning lobster and crab fishing? Have you been to Bali’s Jimbaran Bay and see what those seafood warungs are selling? That’s like banning bread and butter for local fishermen.

Chairman of the Indonesian Fishermen Association (HNSI) in Tabanan, Ketut Arasana expressed that this new regulation must bee revisited for Balinese fishermen to stay afloat.

If the entire region cannot catch lobster, we are dead meat, Arasana said in Jakarta on Wednesday in front of members of Parliament.
