Dozens of Indonesian terror victims, mainly those from the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, were finally granted compensation yesterday, following years of struggle for financial support from the government.
The Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) yesterday granted 37 surviving victims and victims’ next of kin a total of IDR7.8 billion (US$555,015) worth of compensation, comprising 29 victims of 2002 Bali Bombings, seven victims of 2005 Bali Bombings, and one victim from a shooting in Poso, Central Sulawesi.
In December, the Indonesian government gave its first round of compensation to terror victims, whereby 215 people finally obtained their long-awaited financial support. LPSK deputy chair Susilaningtias previously said that authorities were still collecting data on victims, and an estimated 900 people have yet to receive compensation.
Each family whose close relatives were killed in a terror attack received IDR250 million (US$17,788), while surviving victims with grave, moderate, and minor injuries received IDR210 million (US$14,942), IDR115 million (US$8,182), and IDR75 million (US$5,336), respectively.
LPSK Chairman Hasto Atmojo said that the agency will continue to grant compensation for terror victims, though past survivors have only until June 2021 to apply for compensation.
