Authorities say an Indian tourist tragically fell off a cliff and died at Nusa Penida’s Broken Beach on Saturday afternoon.
According to Nusa Penida Search and Rescue (SAR) Coordinator Cakra Negara, 43-year-old Abhishek Bhatia was standing atop a cliff of the iconic hollow cove and had asked his driver to take a photo of him while he stood near the edge.
“The victim slipped and fell over the cliff,” Cakra said in a statement sent to Coconuts Bali.
Bhatia was reportedly killed upon impact following a 40-meter drop.
The SAR unit received a report about Bhatia’s fall at 4:40pm. After the unit arrived, they lowered two rescuers using a rope down the cliff, who then attached a rope to the victim’s body and pulled him up in an operation that took approximately 2.5 hours, as it was mostly carried out in the dark.
Separately, Bali Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Chief Gede Darmada urged tourists and guides to be mindful of the safety hazards when visiting Nusa Penida’s breathtaking but dangerous natural formations.
In November 2022, an Indonesian-Vietnamese tourist fell off a 40-meter-high cliff at Broken Beach while doing summersaults near the edge for the sake of photos. Thankfully, he survived with a broken leg.
