Director General of Immigration, Ronny F. Sompie is strongly denying talk that he is somehow related to Engeline’s accused murderer, Margriet Megawe.
It was apparently in a hearing during Margriet’s trial for the murder of her eight-year-old adoptive daughter Engeline, when defense witness Laureta Inneke alleged Margriet had some sort of family link with Indonesia’s current Director General of Immigration.
“Indeed Magriet is from Manado. But there is no relationship at all with my family,” Sompie said on Thursday, as quoted by Tribun Bali.
Other than having the same Manado roots, reports did not really get into why Inneke would make this sort of allegation in the first place, but clearly Sompie wasn’t happy with his named being pulled into the mix. Come on, who wants to be linked to a woman accused of murdering her eight-year-old?
Sompie has said he will not sue anyone over the inaccurate information, but he wants the public to get its facts straight.
Before he stepped into his current high-ranking role, Sompie was the head of police in Bali—which happened to be at the time of Engeline’s disappearance. It was under his leadership that Margriet was declared a suspect in the case, after Engeline was found buried in her backyard, he made sure to carefully remind everyone yesterday.
