A whopping IDR300 million (US$22,000) was stolen from an ATM in Bali’s Balangan area in the early hours of Thursday and the security guard on duty at the time is now in the hospital after getting attacked during the robbery.

Bali’s become a notorious destination for card skimming, but there are also apparently people on the island who prefer using brute force to pull out massive amounts of cash, unauthorized of course.

The ATM robbed was at the Nirmala supermarket on Jl. Pantai Balangan.

Denpasar Police Chief Comr. Hadi Purnomo confirmed the robbery and told reporters that police have CCTV footage of the robbery and that at least five people were involved.

Two cars could be seen driving up in the footage and the perpetrators were wearing helmets and had their faces covered, according to Purnomo.

“It’s being checked what kind of car,” he said.

Purnomo also said that the guard on duty at the scene is now in the hospital after getting punched and beat up.

“Before the incident, the security guard was on duty but then came a number of perpetrators who then tied the victim up and emptied the ATM,” Purnomo said on Thursday, as quoted by Bali Post.

Police have set up a crime scene around the ATM in accordance with their investigation.
