Reports are coming in about damages to residential and public facilities in Bali and neighboring West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off of the provinces’ coasts yesterday afternoon.

Thankfully, no casualties or injuries were recorded from the earthquake, which was felt throughout Bali and even reached NTB’s Lombok and East Java’s Banyuwangi.

Among the facility damages was that of a public high school in Payangan, Gianyar. A video on social media shows rubbles from the school’s collapsed entrance, recorded by Payangan Police Chief Putu Agus Ady Wijaya.

Wijaya said he suspects the quake merely exacerbated cracks that had already formed in the school building.

Unfortunately, some regions on the island saw even greater destruction, as reported by the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).

In Karangasem, residents have reported damages of various levels to their houses, from cracks in walls to complete collapse.

In Central Lombok, at least one family saw the destruction of their home. Thankfully, they had run out of the house when the earth shook.

There are no official estimates yet on the material losses caused by yesterday’s earthquake.
