High school student faces 5 years jail for allegedly attacking civil servant in Denpasar, Bali

A high school student suspected of attacking a civil servant is facing charges that carry a five year penalty in prison.

Nineteen-year-old Ad alias Gerut allegedly slashed I Wayan Kanti, 44, with a machete—while likely under the influence of alcohol last Friday morning in East Denpasar, reports Denpost

Nyoman Darsana of Denpasar Police told Denpost that the case has been classified as severe abuse, “purely because of his being drunk, and no other motive,” he said.

Although Gerut has student status, he’s over 18 years old so he will apparently be tried as an adult.

“In terms of age, the suspect is not a child anymore. This incident is not included under juvenile delinquency, but severe persecution,” Darasna added.

Kanti, the victim, was seriously injured from the incident and is still reportedly undergoing treatment at Sanglah Hospital. Thankfully Denpost reports his condition has been improving.
