Heavy rains prompted a brief closure of Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport on Monday, with a number of inbound flights getting diverted to Surabaya.

The airport shut down for over an hour, disrupting the schedule of 20 flights.

“For safety reasons, Airnav has issued the Notice to Airman (Notam),” the airport’s Head of Public Relations Arie Ahsanurrohim said in Kuta on Monday, as quoted by Tempo.

The Notam warning, applied from 7:54am to 9:30am Monday morning, was of limited visibility because of the intense downpour.

“There were 13 planes that could not take off, and seven others that could not land,” Ahsanurrohim said.

Flights affected included both international and domestic routes.

Visibility was just 100 meters during Ngurah Rai’s shutdown—the normal minimum visibility is 800 meters, according to the airport spokesman.

The flights that could not land in Bali were diverted to Surabaya’s Juanda Airport.
