Head of Ngurah Rai Bali Customs says drug trafficking cases down after Bali 9 executions

The amount of drug trafficking cases foiled in Bali is reportedly much lower at this point in 2015 compared with all of 2014. Head of Bali’s customs at Ngurah Rai Airport believes this is a result of the executions of drug traffickers, including the Bali Nine pair, in April earlier this year.

“Yes, hopefully there’s an impact from the death penalty that has been carried out,” said Budi Harjanto, Head of Customs and Excise at Bali’s airport, on Tuesday as quoted by Kompas

Harjanto says 20 drug smuggling attempts were foiled by Ngurah Rai Customs and Excise officers in the whole of 2014, while this year, from January to September thus far, there have just been six recorded cases. (No, he did not explore the probably unlikely possibility that this could mean his officers are not on their A-game and are letting way more things slip through.)

In May 2015, Chinese woman Lin Jia Ling was arrested with 0.88 grams of meth in her underwear, while Indian man Muhammed Said Sayed was arrested this past Saturday at the airport with 1.5 kilograms of meth.

The four other smuggling cases where through packages sent in the mail, Harjanto says.
