Gigi guitarist Dewa Budjana started out playing in the pasar

Indonesian guitar hero Dewa Budjana, apparently had his big start in a traditional Balinese pasar.

Before he was a local legend, the guitarist would play in the market of his hometown in Klungkung, East Bali, Budjana told Kompas.

And just because the 51-year-old is big and famous now, doesn’t mean he’s stopped going to the pasar.

“Every time I return to Klungkung, I definitely go to the traditional market. The snack food market there is DELICIOUS. I often also invite street children to the market,” Budjana told Kompas on Friday.

His experience playing in the market is what he credits his decision of launching his vinyl album Hasta Karma.

In total, Budjana has released eight solo albums, three vinyl albums, and four international albums.

“I love the atmosphere. So I choose to release albums and perform in the pasar,” said Budjana, who is preparing to release his ninth and tenth solo albums next year.

And if he did not already sound humble enough, the guitarist joked, “The biggest problem with the market is if nature calls suddenly. It’s hard to find a toilet there said Budjana.
