‘Get Rich or Die Trying’ singlet featuring executed Bali nine pair reportedly on sale in Kuta

It seems like Bali just can’t stop causing controversies in Australia.

WA today posted a picture of a singlet printed with the faces of Australian Bali Nine pair Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, along with the words “Get Rich or Die Trying”. Chan and Sukumaran were executed on Wednesday 29 April this year for drug-trafficking charges despite pleas, outcries, and condemnations from the international community, including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon.

According to a twitter user that alerted WA Today to the singlets, they have been “selling like crazy” in Kuta.

A video on these singlets for sale have also been posted by another individual to the Facebook page of News Talk 6PR 882, a commercial radio station based in Perth, Australia.

Found a pretty distasteful shirt today in Bali….

We suspected that this would cause widespread outrage in Australia and expected a lot of Bali-bashing to occur in the comments section. Reactions, however, have been surprisingly mixed, with many appreciating the humor and calling it “gold” and “Best.Shirt.Ever!!!!”, some pointing out that it serves merely as a warning to those thinking of going down the drug-trafficking path, and others posting their disgust at “making a quick buck out of an execution”. Perhaps it hasn’t quite gotten around Aussie social media circles yet (at the time of writing this article, we hadn’t come across any other major Australian media covering this).

If it does, we wouldn’t be surprised if the #BoycottBali movement starts making waves on social media again.
