A middle-aged German national may be looking at several years in prison after he allegedly assaulted an Indonesian driver and attempted to steal the latter’s car before crashing it, the police said.

It all started on Friday afternoon when CR, 56, hopped in a car driven by IA, 35, to visit his friend in Denpasar. The friend reportedly arranged the ride earlier that day by calling IA to drive CR to the capital for the meeting.

“However, during the ride, CR felt as if someone was tailing from behind and he asked [IA] to overtake the car in front of them,” said Buleleng Police’s crime unit chief Hadimastika in a statement sent to Coconuts.

CR was not happy when IA adhered to basic driving rules by turning on his blinker and demanded the driver to just overtake the vehicle in front of them. When IA stopped at a gas station, CR told IA to take the backseat as the German wanted to drive himself.

Naturally, IA declined the strange request, leading to CR punching him in the face and wrestling control of the car.

The video of CR’s antics went viral over the weekend. CR drove the car recklessly before crashing it into a rest area at the gas station before entering a cosmetics store nearby.

An angry mob followed CR into the store and caused panic inside among employees and customers. CR lied down on the floor before police arrived and arrested him.

Hadimastika said that CR is currently in police custody for further questioning. He was charged with robbery and may face up to nine years in prison under Indonesian law.
