German man found dead in Denpasar kos, alleged suicide from inhaling toxic gas

A young German man was reportedly found dead in his West Denpasar boardinghouse on Jl. Gunung Lumut I, after he inhaled toxic gas, allegedly committing suicide.

The dead body of 23-year-old Wolfgang Michael Anton was discovered on Saturday night by his Japanese fiancée, soon to be wife, Yura Takahashi, 23—the two reportedly has plans to get married next year.

When found, Anton’s face was covered in white plastic and at his bedside was a gas cylinder connected to a hose leading to the plastic. Takahashi immediately ripped the plastic off her fiancé’s face, reports said, but she was apparently too late.

“When the plastic was torn, the victim had already died. His body was already cold,” West Denpasar Police Chief Wisnu Wardana said on Sunday, as quoted by Nusa Bali

Police say they’ve so far seen no evidence of foul play.

“Based on the results of the examination, no signs of violence were revealed on the victim’s body. However, officers found a tube of nitrogen gas commonly used for diving. The nitrogen gas was connected to the plastic used to cover all of the victim’s face,” Wardana stated.

Police also said they found a suicide note written by Anton.

Anton’s body was sent to forensics at Sanglah Hospital on Saturday for further examination.

“The motive was likely because of relationship problems. But all is still to be explored,” Wardana added.

Anton’s suicide note alluded to problems with Takahashi, according to Wardana.
