Friend of Bali Suitcase Murder victim is pushing for killers to be tried in US

Unimpressed with the seemingly light sentences handed down in Indonesian court to the young American couple freshly convicted of committing the Bali Suitcase Murder, a friend of the victim says the killers should be tried in American court.

As a close friend of murder victim Sheila von Wiese-Mack, Elliott Jacobson told NBC Chicago that he’s already handed over evidence to the FBI that demonstrates Heather Mack and Tommy Schaefer planned to kill Mack’s mother before they vacationed in Bali, while they they were still in Chicago.

It was announced just yesterday that Schaefer was sentenced to 18 years prison time for murdering von Wiese-Mack on August 12, 2014, while Mack was found guilty of assisting with the murder and given 10 years. The couple’s display of remorse, along with their newborn’s recent birth were reasons cited as to why they were shown so much mercy.

“The sentence was completely unjust,” Jacobson said Tuesday, as quoted by NBC Chicago. “This sentence was nowhere near commensurate with the crime that was committed.”

Elliott also takes issue with the teen mom’s decision to keep baby Stella with her in her prison cell for two years—the maximum time granted in Indonesia.

“That baby should be brought to the United States. Her identity should be completely erased, a new identity established, and a home — a proper home — found for her.”
