A 20-year-old French national allegedly lost control of his car and hit an elderly man in North Kuta yesterday. The victim reportedly died at the scene.

“We have detained the perpetrator for questioning,” Achmad Fahmi Adiatma, who heads Badung Police’s traffic unit, said yesterday.

The foreigner, identified as TB, was reportedly driving his car along Jl. Raya Petitenget, a hotspot for some of Bali’s most popular cafes and boutiques. He lost control of the car as he reached a corner and turned, crashing his vehicle into an elderly man.

The victim, reported to be in his 60s, was cleaning a common area in the community when he was struck. The victim was tossed some five meters upon impact and died at the scene, while the car kept spinning until it hit a community building.

Police suspect that TB may have been speeding and lost control of the MPV that he was driving. Authorities are also investigating whether TB may have been under the influence of alcohol while behind the wheel.
