A Frenchman who was recently unemployed had to break bad and, as a result, was apprehended by police in Bali for stealing from a convenience store in Benoa last week.
Store owner Denny Rachmawan received a report from his staff about the burglary in the early hours of Feb. 23 ahead of the store’s opening that day.
Storekeepers of the Alfamart, located on Kuru Setra Street, noticed signs that the store was broken into, such as damages to the washroom’s ceilings and the patio. After further inspection, Denny noticed that several items were missing, including cigarettes, soft drinks, and cash.
“After doing some inventory on the losses, they reported it to the South Kuta Police,” said Denpasar Police spokesman I Ketut Sukadi in a statement made available yesterday.
A few hours after the report was filed, police, with the assistance of several locals, arrested a French national, identified by his initials JRM, who was reportedly hiding in the bushes near the store.
JRM immediately confessed to his crimes. Police found the stolen items in his bag, including cash worth IDR35,380,000 (US$2,318).
“We suspected that he hid inside the store and waited until it closed,” Sukadi said, citing that JRM had planned to use the money for daily needs as he now has no source of income.
JRM faces up to 7 years behind bars for theft.
