Four fishermen reported missing off the coast of Bali, rough seas

The search is on in northwestern Bali waters for four fishermen that have been out of contact since Tuesday.

The fishermen, in two different boats coming from East Java, had been fishing in the waters of Buleleng Regency’s Menjangan Island. The first pair was from Banyuwangi, while the second from Madura. Both pairs were using jukung, traditional wooden fishing boats, reports Tribun Bali.

Search and Rescue (Basarnas) along with Buleleng Water Police have been combing the area for the past two days.

Buleleng Water Police Chief Insp. Putu Aryana says the search has been fruitless so far, only motor oil cans have been found in the waters east of Menjangan Island.

And because of bad weather conditions, the search has had to take breaks.

The fishermen were allegedly lost at sea due to big waves and strong winds, says Aryana.

Similar weather conditions are forecasted for several weeks ahead and Aryana discourages fishermen from taking to sea because of the danger—but we can only imagine some fishermen can’t heed the advice when they need their catches to put food on the table.
