Former energy and tourism minister, Bali’s Jero Wacik sentenced to 4 years by corruption court

Democratic party politician Jero Wacik was sentenced to four years prison by Corruption Court in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The former Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and Minister of Culture and Tourism is originally from Bali.

During his time serving these high-ranking terms, he diverted ministerial operating funds, the court said.

He was found guilty of corruption and will also be fined Rp 150 million, in addition to the restitution of the Rp 5.7 billion he caused in states losses, reports the Jakarta Post

All things considered, he didn’t get off too horribly in the end, as prosecutors had demanded he serve nine years with a Rp 350 million fine and Rp 18 billion in compensation.

Wacik, though, throughout the whole trial even after the verdict, maintained his innocence and said he should only have been charged with negligence.
