Fireworks blow off Bali man’s fingertip during NYE celebrations

While we love ringing in a new year for a fresh start, New Year’s Eve in Bali always seems to be a unfortunate reminder about the dangers of lighting fireworks by hand.

A local man had his finger tip blown off when lighting some fireworks on Sunday night.

Putu Dadi, a resident of Busungbiu, Buleleng was rushed to the hospital amid new year celebrations after fireworks exploded in his hand.

The 45-year-old was sent to a clinic but then transferred for immediate treatment at Buleleng General Hospital because the severity of his wounds, arriving around 2:30am.

The man’s wife, Kadek Saini, told Bali Post that right at midnight her husband lit the fireworks, which the couple’s son had bought for IDR50,000 (US$3.70). They were supposed to be able to be good for eight rounds, according to the fireworks seller.

It was apparently on the eighth time setting off the fireworks that the thing exploded in Dadi’s hand, instead of the sky.

As a result, Dadi the tip of his middle finger was blown off, his fingernail on his index finger was removed, while his palms were also badly burnt, Bali Post reports.

The man was operated on and his condition is stable, a nurse, Putu Eka Febri Antika Sari told reporters.
