Indonesian authorities were hoping to swiftly execute the Bali Nine Australian pair as quickly as possible once they were transferred to their execution site in Central Java, but their execution could reportedly be delayed for months now because of another prisoner’s status in their death row group.
Filipina death row inmate Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso was lucky enough to get judicial review granted for her case, a process that could take months, reports Australia’s Nine News. The Filipinia domestic worker was sentenced to death in 2010 when she was caught attempting to smuggle 2.6 kilograms of heroin from Malaysia to Yogyakarta.
Judges to Veloso’s review process will reportedly be appointed this week. “After that, the judges will examine the case and study it,” Supreme Court spokesman, Suhadi, said, as quoted by Nine news. “This could take months.”
Veloso is in the same execution group as Bali Nine Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. Indonesian authorities have previously said that the 10 drug offenders in that group will face the firing squad together, so no death date has been set before Veloso’s legal appeal is sorted out.
But, according to Nine News, the Indonesian attorney general has said prisoners could be taken off the execution list to expedite the next round.
