If it were up to the family of a Balinese university student killed in a motorbike accident, the Australian man allegedly responsible for the crash would not be charged.
“The family actually does not want the legal process. We wanted this addressed soon. But police said they could not,” the crash victim’s father, Nyoman Supardika told the Sunday Times. “I hope the process will be completed soon. I hope he will get light punishment.”
Supardika says he saw Australian man Joshua Terelinck receive treatment at the same hospital as his son on July 9, 2015, after their two motorbikes crashed at about 2 am.
Police allege Terelinck’s motorbike collided with that of Putu Agus Andryatna, 22, at a North Kuta intersection, because of Terelinck’s inattention.
Terelinck left Bali after the accident, while Andryatna suffered multiple injuries and died eight days later in the hospital.
But Terelinck returned to Bali on Oct. 8 after receiving a summons. Tbh, we’re surprised he actually came back, while Andryatna’s family seems downright impressed and touched by the man’s apology and efforts to make amends.
“We only deplored that Josh had gone after the accident. There was no communication at all for two months,” Supardika said. “After two months, he came and asked to apologize.”
The Australian man’s Indonesian attorney, Erwin Siregar, says that upon leaving Bali, his client did not know that Andryatna had died.
Since returning to Bali, Terelinck has reportedly paid IDR55 million in compensation, or “peace agreement,” to the killed man’s family. The money should cover costs for a cremation ceremony and the family’s two other sons’ studies.
But despite these private resolutions, authorities say criminal proceedings must move forward.
Terelinck is currently in a jail cell in Badung and could apparently get a maximum of six years behind bars.
