Heavy winds and the recent reappearance of rain storms in Bali have meant more trash washing up ashore.

With the Balinese New Year, Nyepi, just around the corner, falling on March 28 this year, an extra effort is being made to keep Kuta Beach clean.

“Because of the strong winds and heavy rainfall, the trash comes back up,” the Kuta Beach supervisor for the Sanitation Department (DKP), Wiwik Harianto said on Tuesday, as quoted by Tribun Bali.

It’s especially important that the beach is cleared before Melasti, the biggest purification ritual for Balinese Hindus. Melasti is always held ahead of Nyepi and encompasses a procession to the sea for a beach-side purification ritual and ceremony. Melasti this year is on March 25.

“As of today, we’ve had about 10 DKP trucks haul off rubbish (from Kuta Beach),” says Harianto.

DKP will be on standby to clear any more rubbish that may turn up before the holy day, he added.
