Exemption on Bali vehicle age limit could be given to old car ‘communities’ and those used for tourism

After announcing plans in May to introduce legislation putting 25-year age restrictions on cars in Bali, the governor was met with an uproar from antique car enthusiasts.

Old VW collectors and jeep riders were not cool with drafters of the Traffic and Transportation Regulations (LLAJ) saying any car older than 25 years would be turned to scrap metal.

Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika is now responding that a part to the new regulation could be added, allowing vehicles used for community pastimes and tourism to escape the junk yard.

“I think it’s necessary for hobbyists and specific communities to have separate regulations,” Pastika said in Denpasar on Tuesday, as quoted by Tribun Bali

The vehicle age-limit idea is the Bali government’s apparent answer to the island’s congestion problems—though most of the vehicles clogging up traffic in Bali look like brand new cars, giant tour buses, and trucks, to us!

The chairman of the Special LLAJ Draft Committee in the Bali regional council (DPRD) says that the committee will consider making an exception and that even the 25-year age limit is still under debate

IB Udiyana said other options include allowing cars over 25 years old to stay on the road if they pass a standards test that would check their functionality and emissions.
