Earlier this week, prosecutors demanded Agustay Hamda May get 12 years prison for his role in Engeline’s murder.
Now our attention turns to Margriet Megawe, the other defendant on trial for the murder, Engeline’s adoptive mother who has maintained her innocence and blamed Agus throughout the hearings.
Engeline was reported missing from her adoptive family’s Sanur home in May 2015, but her body turned up buried in their backyard just several weeks later. Agus, the family’s former gardner was quickly identified as a suspect and later accused of helping Margriet kill the eight-year-old girl for a large sum of cash.
Margriet should get a life sentence, is what prosecutor Purwanta Sudarmaji on Thursday afternoon in Denpasar District Court. Margriet was not surprisingly reported as sobbing while the prosecutor read the demands.
“Based on all the facts obtained and discovered, there are no mitigating factors and all are against the defendant,” Sudarmaji said, as quoted by Tribun Bali.
The response from Margriet’s legal counsel is schedule for Feb. 15.
“I ask the judge for justice, as fair as possible. Because I did not kill Engeline,” Margriet was quoted as saying to the judges.
