Convicted murderer Margriet Megawe has not been included in a group of prisoners receiving sentence remissions commemorating Indonesia’s 71st anniversary of independence.
This news was confirmed on Tuesday by the head of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights Corrections Division, N Putra Surya Atmaja, according to Berita Dewata.
Margriet was ineligible for remission because of being less than five years into her life sentence—at which point her conduct could be reviewed, said Atmaja.
Had she been granted remission, we’re sure there would have been people lining up in protest given the intense emotional attachment of the public in following Margriet’s case, as the murder investigation and trial unfolded.
Margriet was infamously handed down a life-long sentence this past year for the murder of her 8-year-old adopted daughter, Engeline.
Engeline’s body was found buried in Margriet’s backyard weeks after the family had claimed the little girl had gone missing.
