An elderly Italian man has been taken to immigration after about a year of begging while stranded in Bali, authorities said, after they followed up on reports about the matter from local residents in Badung regency.

I Gusti Agung Ketut Suryanegara, who heads the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) in Badung, said today that the man, identified as 75-year-old AR, was found around Legian, Kuta.

AR reportedly lived in Canggu, North Kuta at one point, and worked as a businessman and an artist. However, he claimed that he is unable to return to Italy due to the pandemic and that the global health crisis has led to his business going bankrupt.

The elderly foreigner has been living along Jl. Benesari since, and surviving from food given by local residents.

Satpol PP officers have since handed him over to immigration, who might set him for deportation.

According to reports, AR was cooperative throughout the process and expressed hope that authorities may help him return to his home country.
