Dutch tourist dies snorkeling in North Bali

A Dutch man reportedly died on Monday afternoon in North Bali while snorkeling in Pemuteran, Buleleng.

Even after resuscitation efforts to bring back Anton De Jongh, the 74-year-old could unfortunately not be saved.

Gerokgak Police Chief I Gusti Ngurah Alit Putra said the man had been staying with his wife, Johanna Maria, at Adi Assri Hotel when they decided to go out snorkeling with two other friends. Once finished, De Jongh’s wife and their two friends returned to the beach and waited for him to come back, but he did not return.

“They were waiting for the victim at the beach for an hour, but he did not come out of the water,” Tribun Bali quoted Alit as saying on Tuesday.

Around 5 pm, his body was later found limp, floating in the water. He was rushed to the shore to be given CPR, but was apparently beyond saving.

De Jongh’s body has been sent to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar for an autopsy.

“The victim allegedly died due to drowning. We still cannot be sure why. We are still deepening our investigation by examining witnesses and awaiting results of the autopsy,” Alit said.
