Drowning deaths of two kids in Kuta hotel pool prompts higher safety standards

Kuta Police is moving to set the hotel standard operating procedure in Kuta to require supervisory personnel in swimming pool areas after an upsetting incident where two children drowned.

The two kids, tourists from Surabaya, reportedly drowned at the Bali Summer Hotel on Jan. 7 in an “adult pool” that was as deep as two meters.

“We will create a SOP for hotels where additional people must supervise the pool, in order to provide security and convenience for tourists, Kuta Police Chief I Wayan Sumara said on Friday, as quoted by Tribun Bali

Police also insist hotels should provide better signage to distinguish between “kid” and “adult” pools, along with pools’ depths.

Sumara says police have investigated the parents of the victims, Faiz Rizky, 10, and Kanza Akila Nanza Azara, 7, along with the head of the hotel’s security. From the result of investigation, the drowning has been ruled a pure accident, Sumara says.
