Indonesia’s Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno has publicly denounced the actions of an alleged pervert in Bali, warning that similar behavior could drive tourists away from the island.

Last week, a local man was caught secretly filming a foreign woman in a bikini in Bali’s Berawa Beach. A video showing the tourist snatching the phone from the man, with him pleading for it back, went viral and attracted public outrage towards the alleged perv.

The incident caught the attention of Sandiaga, who has been keen to revive Bali’s tourism industry, which was devastated during the pandemic.

“Nobody likes being recorded without their permission. Even in the name of content, at least do it ethically,” Sandiaga Uno expressed yesterday.

Sandiaga stressed that he aims to make Indonesia safe for foreign travelers, especially in the Island of Gods.

“The act of taking unsolicited videos harms tourism in Bali,” he said.

Bali is of particular concern to Sandiaga as Indonesia’s most popular holiday island is set to host several major events this year, including the G20 Summit, World Tourism Day, and the IESF World Esports Championship.

“So all I’m asking is to never repeat this incident again. We are a cultured nation,” he concluded.

The alleged perv, as well as his victim, remain unidentified.
