A Russian man found himself bidding farewell to the shores of Bali as he was deported by the island’s immigration authorities after serving time behind bars for growing marijuana in his rented house.

Three officers of the Denpasar Immigration Detention Center yesterday evening escorted IC, 34, at the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport as he boarded a plane bound for Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Alexander S Pushkin International Airport.

The Russian man reportedly arrived in Indonesia in May 2017 with a tourist visa. On Jan. 22, 2020, authorities arrested IC and his wife after receiving a tip-off that he had been growing marijuana in his rented house in Puri Gading, Jimbaran.

IC was subsequently found guilty of planting narcotics under Indonesia’s strict narcotics law and was jailed for four years and two months. His wife was jailed for a year and was deported after serving time.

IC was released from prison on May 19 and then detained at the Denpasar Immigration Detention Center for 20 days before he was deported.
