Denpasar minimarket fire causes an estimate of Rp 1.3 billion in damages

A fire in east Denpasar turned out to be quite costly for the minimarket that it struck.

Residents of Jl. Soerapatti, Banjar Kayu Mas Kaja, East Denpasar awoke early on Monday morning, startled by these sound of flames crackling at around 4 am.

Losses from the fire are estimated to total as much as Rp 1.3 billion, according to East Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation Chief Nyoman Darsana.

The first floor was completely devoured by flames while the second and third floors of the building, also belonging to PT Sumber Alfaria Trijaya Tbk were burnt as well, according to Tribun Bali’s report.

Darsana explained that the building’s second floor was were stock was stored, such as snacks, soft drinks, diapers, tissues, etc, while the third floor had the employee lounge and more expensive goods stored, such as televisions, spring beds, phones, clothes, and so on.

Police have interviewed the employees on duty at the time the fire broke out—based on their statements, there seems to have been several explosions on the second floor around 4 am.

“We do not yet know the cause. We are still looking into it,” Darsana told Tribun.

However, the Bali Mitigation Disaster Agency (BPBD) has since told the press they believe the fire was caused by a short circuit on the second level, not from another cause like a gas cylinder explosion.
