A Denpasar resident is faced with the choice of forking over Rp 1 million or spending 14 days in jail over some tempe he threw out. Now that’s some really expensive tempe.
The penalty for Wayan Kandra was decided in a hearing yesterday for Banjar Grenceng, Denpasar.
As with many banjar (neighborhood) in the area, Kandra’s follows a schedule of when residents are allowed to put of their trash and apparently Kandra violated the schedule.
“Actually, in the bag there was only three pieces of tempe, it wouldn’t have been good to throw it out on the street, actually there is a garbage receptacle, there was still a lot of trash piled up inside, so I put the tempe there,” Kadra said, as quoted by Liputan6.
Sounds pretty reasonable, right? Well, unfortunately for Kandra, he just so happened to throw out the tempe at a time when Denpasar is attempting to crack down on garbage disposal rules and he was spotted by a task force from the Department of Hygiene and Public Spaces (DKP) Denpasar.
Kandra’s punishment is actually a pretty lenient one, according to DKP Denpasar Head Ketut Wisada.
Offenders of these garbage disposal regulations could be fined Rp 5 million or face three months jail time, Wisada said.
