Denpasar government urges traditional villages to enact sanctions for waste disposal violators

Sick of stinky waste disposal issues, the Denpasar government is pushing traditional villages (pakraman) in the regency to issue a written agreement (perarem) related to local residents and their garbage disposal.

A smart move to bring it to the pakraman level, because we all know where the real power in Bali lies when it comes to long-time existing neighborhood power structures.

The need for some perarem to rein in everybody was stated by Secretary of the Department of Hygiene and Public Spaces (DKP) Dewa Sayoga while attending a hearing in Denpasar District Court for residents in trouble over improper garbage disposal in Banjar Gerenceng, Jl. Sutomo Denpasar.

A total of 23 residents were reprimanded and fined millions of rupiah for littering and violating the neighborhood waste disposal schedule, reported Tribun Bali

“Of course we’re always side-by-side with traditional villages. Hopefully traditional villages will issue a perarem. Like how a number of traditional villages that already did (issue perarem) themselves. Perarem is more powerful than legislation,” Sayoga said on Thursday, as quoted by Kompas
