This probably comes as no surprise to anyone, but a bird market in Denpasar has been caught selling a protected species in less than kind conditions.
Senior Investigator from Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group Marison Guciano is saying Satria Bird Market in Denpasar is selling a type of falcon protected under law in the most appalling of conditions.
“This bird is protected by Act No. 5 Year 1990 on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It cannot be sold and bought openly or not,” Gucaino told Merdeka on Tuesday. Reports did not go into, however, what course of action will be taken to deal with this and what sanctions will be handed down, if any.
Based on their own observations, Merdeka is backing up Guciano’s statement that the animals are sold in poor conditions from lethargic looking animals, to chains, to very dirty cages.
It’s not just birds sold at Satria. Other animals, such as monkeys, cats, iguanas, geckos, hedgehogs, and more are known to be for sale there.
“The prices run from Rp 70,000 to tens of millions,” one trader who declined to be named told Merdeka. When asked about protected species being sold at the market, the trader apparently claimed ignorance. “I don’t know, I only sell ordinary birds,” he said.
