Denpasar area duo specializing in helmet stealing arrested

South Denpasar Police arrested two people on Wednesday night accused of stealing helmets up and down the Denpasar-Sanur area.

Helmet thieves are just the worst. Not only does it suck to have to shell out cash to buy a new one—never mind go through the inconvenience of setting out to buy one—but it’s also just a big F-U safety-wise when you get back to your motorbike and realize you’’ll both have to break the law and put your cranium in danger to ride back helmet-less all the way home.*

The pair apparently was targeting Renon and coastal parts of Sanur especially, has been identified in reports as 20-year-old Muhlis and 21-year-old Inggar Dian Kurniawati.

“Yes, they were specializing in stealing helmets in Renon and Sanur. It’s already been many times that they’ve committed such theft,” South Denpasar Police’s Crime Unit Chief Hendi Septiadi confirmed to Tribun Bali on Thursday night.

The arrest of Muhlis and Kurniawati stemmed from reports from the public. They were reportedly caught red-handed on Wednesday night when stealing a cream-colored Lubro brand helmet worth Rp 350,000 from a motorbike parked near Pantai Segara Ayu Sanur.

What we love about this story is that bystanders in the parking area noticed what the pair was doing and immediately informed security (instead of doing nothing, which happens too often), who then called South Denpasar Police.

After some interrogation, police say that the pair admitted to being part of a group of six people who go around stealing helmets. Septiadi says police are taking the investigation further.

*No, we’re not at all bitter about previously having our own helmets stolen.
