Dengue deaths: 18 of 5,175 patients died so far this year

Dengue fever has not gone gentle on those unlucky enough to contract the virus this year.

From the beginning of 2015 to April, 18 people have died from dengue, according to the Bali Provincial Health Office (PHO Bali).

Of this total, Buleleng, North Bali has the highest number of dengue fever cases in Bali, reports Tribun Bali

Buleleng has a recorded 1,023 cases of dengue from January to April this year, with two fatalities, reports say.

But in all this, there’s a little good news. “Dengue fever cases in Bali in general have been declining from March to April,” said the head of PHO Bali’s office, Dr. Ketut Suarjaya.

After Buleleng, Gianyar (home to Ubud) had the second most amount of dengue cases, with 1,011 patients and three fatalities. Though these are just the ones on record, so the actual number could be greater.

Third after Buleleng and Gianyar is Badung regency with 996 cases, then Denpasar with 869 cases, Tabanan with 378, Karangasem with 288, Klungkung with 235, Jembrana with 205, and finally Bangli with 170, reports Tribun Bali.

According to Suarjaya, most of the dengue fatalities occurred amongst people who were too late to seek medical treatment.

“Although dengue is endemic every year, the average public understanding of the dangers of dengue fever is still lacking,” he told Tribun.
