Authorities suspect that a dead dolphin found washed ashore on Gianyar regency’s Saba beach on Tuesday might have perished after getting caught in fishing nets.

“We suspect the dolphin died from being caught in fishing nets because there were remnants of nets on its mouth,” Denpasar’s Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (BPSPL) said in a statement.

“As a result, the dolphin might have had difficulties swimming and eventually washed ashore.”

When found, the dolphin’s two-meter long corpse was already decomposing, which reportedly made examination and identification difficult for the BPSPL team.

The dolphin had been found between Pering Beach and Saba Beach, right in front of Flamingo Beach Club.

Earlier in March, a dwarf sperm whale – a protected species – died on Rangkan Beach in Gianyar’s Ketewel village, after it had been stranded for a few days.
