An Indonesian woman is fighting for her life at Denpasar’s Sanglah Hospital following a near-fatal accident on Sunset Road on Jan. 7.
And like many who find themselves in this life-or-death predicament, she is also fighting to pay her mounting medical expenses.
The young woman, Jean, was orphaned at age 13 and has no family to support her and without medical insurance, there is limited time left to pay her outstanding bill that continues to climb up, according to a crowdfunding page set up by the woman’s friends that seeks to raise Rp 250 million for her.
While the cause of the accident is still apparently under investigation, Jean nearly bled to death at the hospital and is suffering from multiple injuries, including three wounds in her intestines, a broken upper jaw, and severe blood loss, says the crowdfunding page.
Jean was in a coma in the ICU at Sanglah, but she has since woken up. However, Jean suffers trauma from the accident and can’t remember what happened.
“There is a slight positive thing is that she can recognise some of her friends however it goes up and down quite fast,” Indonesian expat Ramon Meijer told Coconuts Bali over email.
Meijer, who along with his wife, is a close friend of Jean, describes the young woman as “resilient despite lots of negativity in her life.”
“Jean had a lot of ups and down in her life. Being an orphan and sadly being alone in this world made her resilient.”
Jean has been in Bali since November 2015, working as a marketing manager at Bale Udang, with the aspirations of one day opening up her own business as a marketing consultant in Bali.
“Sadly this accident is another blow to her as she was not properly insured and has no financial back up to rely on.
“But i know she s fighting for her life. We focus on her recovery but the foreseeable future looks pitch dark as she needs to recover from her injuries,” Meijer said.
Almost Rp 50 million has been raised for Jean of the crowdfunding page’s Rp 250 million goal, as of writing time.
