Cop allegedly tazed, broke 14-year-old boy’s leg in Denpasar

A police officer in Denpasar allegedly assaulted a 14-year-old child and broke the boy’s leg, prompting authorities to launch an internal investigation after the victim’s family reported the incident.

The victim, identified by his initials MR, said he was tazed when police conducted patrols on illegal street racing in South Denpasar last Saturday. According to reports, the officer stomped on MR while he was down, breaking the teenager’s leg.

“I’m not certain on dates of the incident, but right after what happened, [MR’s family] reported the matter to the Bali Police’s internal affairs division [Propam],” Bali Police spokesman Syamsi said today.

The identity of the officer in question is not clear at this point, as he was not in uniform at the assault, police said. The incident, however, had occurred during a scheduled official patrol in the area, prompting suspicions that it was carried out by a member of the police force.

“Whether or not this was done by a police officer has not been ascertained because even the person who reported [the incident] has not determined that it was [done by a cop],” Syamsi said.

“So there is no certainty, but in this case they reported to the internal affairs division so they will conduct an investigation.”

Police say that if an officer is found to have been behind the incident, they will be sanctioned accordingly.
