A construction worker who has reportedly been on the run after he allegedly stole a tourist’s phone in December has been arrested in North Kuta.

The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Jefrianus Dara Kalli, allegedly stole a smartphone that belonged to a Belarusian tourist.

North Kuta Police Chief I Dewa Putu Gede Anom Danujaya said the suspect committed the crime by himself.

“The suspect works as a construction worker. He’s been charged with theft with a maximum sentence of five years in prison,” Anom said today, as quoted by Nusa Bali.

Police said the theft occurred in the afternoon of Dec. 30, when the victim arrived to check in at a villa in Canggu. He parked his motorcycle on the villa’s grounds and put his phone on the dashboard.

The phone, which was reportedly a blue Huawei P30 Pro worth around IDR11 million, was gone by the time he came back.

The victim then filed a report with North Kuta Police. Jefrianus went on the run since the alleged theft and was finally apprehended on Tuesday. The Huawei phone was confiscated as evidence.
