A passenger on a Citilink airplane bound for Jakarta from Bali passed away earlier today in the airport lounge just before his plane was about to take off.

Suparja, 56, was a member of the Yogyakarta Regional Council representing the Nasdem Party. He was supposed to board a flight to take him back to his residence in the capital at around 10am.

The plane’s flight staff noticed one passenger had not scanned his boarding pass and decided to find him.

They later saw him sitting in the lounge with his hands holding the boarding pass.

“A Citilink staff member named Komang Ayu Sindria tried to wake him up but there was no response,” said the airport’s police chief, Rionson Ritonga.

The plane’s staff members immediately reported the incident to the airport’s security officers and the airport’s doctor came to check for his vital signs.

“[When the doctor checked up on him] he was still breathing but it was not stable. They checked his bag and found several heart-related medicines. Minutes later, at around 10:35am,” he passed away.

Suparja’s body was later brought to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar. His family has been notified and they did not request an autopsy.

Suparja was in Bali for a work-related visit with his fellow legislators. He reportedly left a day early due to an undisclosed family obligation.
