Two Chinese tourists have been arrested for stealing and using a credit card that belonged to another Chinese traveler at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport.
According to local media reports, WY, 37, and HC, 45, snatched the credit card from JY, a Chinese student who had just arrived in Bali on April 23. JY realized that his credit card was missing from his wallet when he was collecting his luggage.
JY contacted his parents and asked them to block his credit card, but they informed him that the card had already been used for a transaction.
“The parents sent him the written notification that the transaction was conducted at Mall Bali Galeria in Kuta, Badung,” Ngurah Rai Airport Police Crime Unit Chief Rionson Ritonga said today, as quoted by Detik.
Rionson said that they received a tipoff from a staff member of a mobile phone store at the mall, who noticed that WY and HC were acting suspiciously on April 26.
The police rushed to the scene and caught WY and HC red-handed. The duo admitted that they had forged JY’s signature and intended to take the items they bought – including an iPhone 14 Promax – back to China.
“The victim suffered IDR181.7 million (US$12,377) in losses,” Rionson said.
WY and HC could face up to six years in prison if convicted of theft and forgery under Indonesian law.
