A Chinese traveler in his late 50s passed away yesterday after he was swept away by the waves at Melasti Beach.

Reports say that Lyu Dayu, 59, was last seen walking near TT Beach Club in Ungasan. It is believed that he went in the water at approximately 2:45pm before he was overwhelmed by strong waves.

A local tour guide named Yulianto reportedly jumped into the ocean after he noticed Lyu Dayu drowning and managed to drag him to shore.

Members of the Badung Balawista (beach lifeguards) immediately assisted Lyu Dayu before the  tourist was brought to Udayana Hospital.

Sadly, he did not make it.

“After getting medical attention from the staff of the Udayana Hospital, the victim was pronounced dead,” said Denpasar Police spokesman I Ketut Sukadi in a written statement.

The police officer warned other travelers to be careful with the waves when spending time at the beach on the island.
