Caterpillar Attack: Thousands of black furry caterpillars infest homes in Jembrana, Bali

They may look cute, but these black furry critters are a major nuisance to Jembrana villagers.

While being surrounding by floating, colorful butterflies is a darn romantic scenario, getting smothered by caterpillars sure isn’t. In fact, it’s rather tortuous and quite itchy.

Dozens of homes in Jembrana, Bali reported caterpillar infestations this weekend across these four villages: East Tegalbadeng Village, Lelateng Village, Baler Bale Agung Village, Negara District and Pendem Village.

The thousands of caterpillars left residents extremely itchy, reports Antara

The caterpillars started by coming out of the trees, then to people’s houses, then finally up into the house, says Pendem Village resident Ketut Putra Utama to Anatra.

Utama describes the caterpillars as having jet-black fur and believes the caterpillars’ hair causes the itching.

To address the caterpillar infestations, affected residents can pretty much just sweep them of their houses, but that can only do so much. They apparently just hope for government assistance.

Nyoman Juna of the Department of Agriculture, in the pest control office says he’s already taken samples of the caterpillars and will bring them to a lab in Denpasar, Antara reports.
